The only plate rule you need
Half the plate vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter carbs and a thumb of fat. No counting and no apps. Build two meals a day like that and most of the rest takes care of itself.
The rule
Half the plate vegetables or salad. A quarter protein, about the size of your palm and as thick. A quarter carbs, such as rice, potatoes, bread, pasta or beans, about the size of your fist. A thumb of fat, such as butter, oil, cheese or nuts.
That is the whole system. It works on a dinner plate, in a lunch box or at a restaurant, and you never need to weigh anything to use it.
Why it works after fifty
It puts protein on the plate at every meal, which matters more now than it did at thirty, because each meal has to clear a higher bar to build muscle. Why, and how much.
Half a plate of vegetables fills you up for very few calories, and the quarter of carbs is enough to fuel training without taking over.
Two meals, not every meal
You do not need a perfect record. Build two meals a day this way and let the third be whatever life hands you. Consistency beats perfection by a long way.
Count for four days, once
If you want to know whether the rule is working, weigh and count your food properly for four days. That shows you where your normal eating actually lands. Then stop counting and go back to the plate.
Cook it twice a week
The rule is easiest when the protein and the carbs are already cooked. Two batches a week, chicken or mince and a pot of rice or potatoes, and every lunch is a matter of filling half a container with salad.
