The gear list

Everything the eleven tests actually need.

Nine of the eleven tests need nothing but a floor. This page is for the other two, and for the joints that have been carrying you around for five decades. Nothing here is bought because it looks good in a garage.

Straight up: the links on this page go to Amazon, and a purchase through one pays me a small commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change what gets recommended. Half this list costs under fifty dollars, and nine of the eleven tests need nothing but a floor.

01

Doorway pull-up bar

Two of the eleven tests need something to hang from. A doorframe bar is the cheapest way to own both, and the dead hang alone is worth the money.

02

Cast iron kettlebell, 16kg

One bell covers the swing, the get-up and the loaded carry. Sixteen kilos is the honest starting weight for most men over fifty. Twelve if you are coming back from a long layoff.

03

Assisted pull-up band set

The bridge between a dead hang and a first rep. Loop it over the bar, put a foot in, and the pull-up becomes a movement you can actually practise instead of one you fail at.

04

Exercise mat, 6mm or thicker

The hollow hold and the deep squat happen on the floor. A thin yoga mat punishes the tailbone and the knees. Six millimetres is the floor, not the ceiling.

05

Low parallettes

Push-ups on the floor jam a wrist that has been around for five decades. Parallettes keep the wrist straight and let the chest drop lower than the hands.

06

Adjustable dip station

Dips are the fastest way to add pressing strength without a bench. Adjustable width matters more after fifty, because shoulder width is not one size.

07

Rotating push-up handles

The cheapest joint insurance on this page. The handle turns as you descend, so the elbow tracks where it wants to instead of where the floor forces it.

08

Wooden gymnastic rings, 32mm

Rings let the shoulder rotate through the pull instead of locking into one groove. Thirty-two millimetre wood grips better than plastic once the hands sweat.

09

Wall-mounted pull-up bar

If the doorframe bar wobbles or the doorway is wrong, this ends the problem permanently. Bolt it into studs and it outlives the house.

10

Grip strengthener set

Grip is what fails first in the dead hang and the loaded carry, and grip strength tracks with how the next twenty years go. Five minutes while the coffee brews.

11

Adjustable weighted vest

When eight strict pull-ups stop being hard, this is how the test keeps meaning something. Start at ten pounds. Vests beat belts for push-ups and carries.

12

Dip belt

For loading pull-ups and dips past bodyweight. A belt hangs the weight below you instead of stacking it on the spine, which the lower back appreciates.

13

Adjustable dumbbells

One pair replaces a rack. Presses, rows and curls for the two weight days a week, without a room full of iron.

14

Wrist wraps

Push-up volume is a wrist problem before it is a chest problem. Wraps hold the joint stacked so the sixth set feels like the first.

15

Elbow compression sleeves

Pull-up volume and heavy bag work both land in the elbow. Sleeves keep the joint warm, which is most of the battle after fifty.

16

Knee sleeves

The deep squat hold is a knee test as much as a hip test. Sleeves let you sit in the bottom long enough to actually make progress.

17

High-density foam roller

Thirty-six inches, firm foam. The mid-back it opens up is the same mid-back that stops the overhead reach test from passing.

18

Percussion massage gun

Not magic, and not a substitute for training. It is the thing that gets you to the next session when the calves and the lats have decided otherwise.

19

Massage ball set

For the feet, the hips and the spots a roller is too big to reach. Five dollars of rubber that fixes what an hour of stretching does not.

20

Adjustable speed rope

Three minutes of rope is a conditioning round you can do in a driveway. Adjustable cable, ball bearings, nothing else needed.

21

Heavy bag

Three rounds of three minutes, twice a week. The heavy bag is conditioning that does not feel like cardio, which is why it actually gets done.

22

Bag gloves and wraps

Hitting a bag bare-knuckled at fifty is how you lose three months. Wraps first, then gloves. Both cheap, both non-negotiable.

23

Interval timer

Half of the eleven tests are timed. A wall timer you can see across the room beats a phone you have to pick up mid-hold.

24

Flat-soled training shoes

A cushioned running shoe tips you forward in the squat and hides what the ankle is doing. Flat sole, wide toe box, and the squat test gets honest fast.

Buy in this order

If it is all coming out of one paycheck.

Four purchases, in order, and you can run every test on the list. Everything else on this page is an upgrade, not a requirement.

01

Something to hang from

A doorway bar buys you the pull-up test and the dead hang in one purchase. Cheapest thing on the list, and the one that changes the most.

02

One kettlebell

Swing, get-up, carry. Three of the eleven tests, one piece of iron, and it never wears out.

03

A mat worth lying on

The hollow hold and the deep squat are floor work. A thin mat is why people quit them.

04

Bands, then joints

Assist bands to build the first pull-up. Then wrist wraps and sleeves, which cost less than one physio visit.
