The best adjustable dumbbells for a man over fifty

Adjustable dumbbells are an upgrade, not a foundation. Buy the kettlebell and the bar first. When the bell stops being enough, a good adjustable pair is the most strength you can fit in the corner of a room.

The best adjustable dumbbells for a man over fifty

Straight up: the links on this page go to Amazon, and a purchase through one pays me a small commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change what gets recommended. These picks are chosen on build, spec and thousands of owner reviews, for a body over fifty, not on who pays the most.

The short answer

Three ways to change the weight, one budget pick.

Best overall 01

PowerBlock Elite EXP

PowerBlock Elite EXP, Stage 1, 5 to 50 lb per hand

A magnetic pin selects the weight, micro weights give 2.5 lb jumps, and expansion kits take it to 70 or 90 lb per hand later, so it grows with you instead of being replaced. Five-year warranty. The block shape takes a session to get used to.

Easiest to use 02

BowFlex SelectTech

BowFlex Results Series SelectTech, 5 to 52.5 lb

Turn the dials at each end and the dumbbell lifts out of the tray at the new weight. Replaces fifteen pairs. It feels most like a normal dumbbell in the hand, and the 52.5 lb top end is plenty for most men past fifty.

One-hand change 03

Core Fitness TwistLock

Core Fitness adjustable dumbbell set, 5 to 50 lb

Set it in the cradle, twist the handle with one hand, lift. The compact shape is closer to a fixed dumbbell than most adjustables. Two-year parts warranty, shorter than PowerBlock.

Amazon Basics 25 lb

Amazon Basics Adjustable Dumbbell, 25 lb, single

One dumbbell, 5 to 25 lb in 5 lb steps, with a tray. It is sold singly, so a pair means two. Fine for rows, presses and lateral work for a returning lifter. You will outgrow it on the big lifts.

Do you need them yet

Probably not, if you are starting. Nothing in the eleven tests needs a dumbbell, and the home gym under $200 covers every test without one. Buy adjustables when your kettlebell work has stopped moving and you want more pressing, rowing and lunging than one bell allows.

What matters after fifty

Small jumps. Older joints and tendons adapt more slowly than muscle. Moving from 25 to 30 lb is a 20 percent jump. A set with 2.5 lb steps lets you progress without that jolt.

A secure lock. A plate coming loose overhead is the injury that ends a year of training. Every set here locks the plates. Still check it before every overhead set.

Enough top end. Around 50 lb per hand covers nearly everyone past fifty for years. Paying for 90 lb you will not lift is money better spent elsewhere.

What to skip

Spin-lock bars with loose plates. Cheap, but changing weight between sets takes long enough that you will stop doing it.

Anything with a screen or a subscription built in. The dumbbell does not need to count your reps.

Before you ask

3 questions.

What weight range do I need?

Five to about fifty pounds per hand covers almost every man over fifty for years. Only buy higher if you are already pressing heavy, or buy a set like the PowerBlock that can be expanded later.

Dial or pin, which is better?

Dial sets like BowFlex are faster and feel more like a normal dumbbell. Pin sets like PowerBlock are tougher, more compact and can be expanded. Both are good. Pick on feel and on whether you will want heavier later.

Are adjustable dumbbells safe overhead?

The good ones are, when they are locked correctly. Check the lock before every overhead set, and never drop an adjustable dumbbell, which is how mechanisms get damaged.
