Should you eat before a morning workout?
For a ten to twenty minute session, no. Most people train perfectly well on an empty stomach. If you feel shaky, light-headed or flat, a small snack twenty to thirty minutes before fixes it, and a glass of water helps either way.
Short sessions do not need fuel
The follow-along sessions on this site run from four minutes to thirty. Your body carries far more stored energy than that uses, even first thing in the morning, before breakfast.
Training first and eating afterwards is a perfectly good routine. For a lot of men it is also the only part of the day nobody else has a claim on, which makes it the time the habit actually survives.
When a snack helps
If you feel shaky, dizzy or weak ten minutes in, or the session is longer and harder than usual, eat something small first. Half a banana, a small pot of yoghurt or a slice of toast, twenty to thirty minutes before you start.
Keep it small. A full breakfast right before a workout tends to sit badly, and squats on a full stomach are nobody's idea of a good morning.
The one exception
If you take insulin or tablets that lower blood sugar, training on an empty stomach can take it too low. That is a conversation with your doctor about timing, before fasted morning sessions become a habit, not something to work out on your own.
Water, either way
You have just gone seven or eight hours without drinking. One full glass of water before you start costs ten seconds and makes the session feel easier. Why that matters more after fifty.
Eat properly afterwards
The meal that matters is the one after. A real breakfast with thirty grams or more of protein within a couple of hours of finishing does the job. What that looks like, and how much protein the whole day needs.
