The best dip station for a man over fifty
Dips build the chest, triceps and shoulder strength that carries the push-up test. They also load the front of the shoulder more than almost anything else, so after fifty the station matters less than how deep you go. Both are covered here.
Straight up: the links on this page go to Amazon, and a purchase through one pays me a small commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change what gets recommended. These picks are chosen on build, spec and thousands of owner reviews, for a body over fifty, not on who pays the most.
The short answer
Three stations and the add-on.
RELIFE dip bar
RELIFE Dip Bar for Home Gym, 400 lb rated
Heavy steel, 400 lb rating, four height settings and an adjustable gap between the handles from about 20 to 27 inches. That width adjustment matters: a gap that is too wide is what hurts shoulders.
Sportsroyals adjustable
Sportsroyals Adjustable Dip Bar Station, 400 lb
2mm steel, a connecting safety bar along the bottom for stability, and four height plus four width settings. Light enough to carry outside. Padded grips.
Yes4All adjustable stand
Yes4All Adjustable Dip Stand, 500 lb capacity
Ten width and eight height settings, a 500 lb rating and triangular welded bases with rubber feet. The heaviest and steadiest of the three, and it includes padded push-up handles.
DMoose dip belt
DMoose Dip Belt with 36-inch steel chain
Only when ten clean bodyweight dips are easy. Hang a kettlebell from the chain and the same bars keep you progressing for years. Works for weighted pull-ups too.
The depth rule
Go down until your upper arm is level with the floor, and no further. Past that point the front of the shoulder takes load it does not handle well after fifty, and that is where most dip injuries come from.
If the front of your shoulder already aches when you press overhead, read why pressing overhead hurts after fifty before you start dipping, and start with bench dips or the push-up.
What matters in a station
Width. The handles should sit about shoulder width, so your elbows track back rather than flaring out. Adjustable width is worth paying for.
Stability. A station that rocks as you lower is a station that tips. Look for a connecting bar or wide feet, and set it on a flat floor.
Height. Your feet should clear the floor with knees bent. Taller men need the higher settings.
