Books / No. 04

Stiffness is common. It is not a sentence.

Most people over fifty are told that stiffness, shaky balance and a slower walk are just part of getting older. This book shows you how to measure your mobility like a vital sign and train it back with ten to fifteen minutes a day.

A page from it

How it reads.

From Chapter Two

Mobility is not a luxury. It is not a bonus. It is a vital sign in every sense of the word. It reflects the health of your joints, your muscles, your nervous system, and your balance systems working together.

And unlike many things we measure, mobility responds to treatment. It improves when you train it.

Reclaim Your Movement, Chapter Two

Honestly

Who this is for.

01

You are stiff every morning, your balance feels less sure than it did, and you have been told that is just age

02

You want to stay independent for the long run, getting up from the floor, walking fast, carrying your own bags

03

You want ten or fifteen minutes a day, not another hour-long class

And who it is not for.

01

You have had a recent surgery, a joint replacement or a history of falls and have not spoken to a professional. Do that first

02

You want a diagnosis or a treatment. This is general education about movement, not physical therapy

Before you ask

Four questions.

Is this a stretching book?

Partly. Flexibility is one of four layers, alongside strength, balance and walking speed. The point is to measure all four, then train the one that is holding you back.

How long does it take each day?

Ten to fifteen minutes. The daily reset is ten, and the extra layers add a few minutes on the days you do them.

Do I need equipment?

No. A chair, a wall and some floor space cover the whole program.

Who wrote it?

Malik Powell, who writes The Over 50 Standard. He is not a physician or physical therapist, the book tells you when to see one instead, and the people in it are composites.
